Suramadu Bridge is a bridge that crosses the Strait of Madura, connecting the island of Java (Surabaya) and the island of Madura (in Bangkalan, exactly Eastern Kamal), Indonesia. With a length of 5.438 m, this bridge is the longest bridge in Indonesia at the moment. Suramadu bridge consists of three parts namely overpass (causeway), the connecting bridge (bridge approach), andthe main bridge (main bridge).

The bridge was inaugurated beginning construction by President Megawati Sukarnoputri on August 20, 2003 and inaugurated the opening by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on June 10, 2009. Construction of the bridge is intended to accelerate development in Madura Island, covering the areas ofinfrastructure and economy in Madura, a relatively lagging behind compared to other regions in East Java. The estimated cost of the construction of this bridgewas 4.5 trillion rupiah.

The creation of the bridge is made from three sides, both sides both sides ofBangkalan in Surabaya. In the meantime, simultaneously also made the Middlespan construction consisting of a main bridge and approach bridge.

Construction
Suramadu bridge essentially is a combination of three types of bridges with a length overall of all 5.438 meters with a width of approximately 30 metres. This bridge provides four lanes 3.5 metres wide, two-way with two emergency laneswide 2.75 m. The bridge also provides special lanes for motorcyclists on eachside of the bridge.

Overpass
Overpass or Causeway was built to link the bridge with road constructionthrough the shallow water on both sides. This overpass consists of 36 along thespan of the meter on the side of 1.458 Surabaya and 45 spans all 1,818 meterson the side of Madura.

This flyover construction using PCI buffer with a length of 40 m each spansupported by Foundation of the steel pipe with a diameter of 60 cm.

The connecting bridge
The connecting bridge or approach bridge connecting the main with the flyoverbridge. The bridge consists of two parts, each with a length of 672 meters.

The bridge is a concrete box construction using buffer along each span of 80 meters with 7 spans each side supported cantilever Foundation diameter 180 cm.

Main bridge
The main bridge or main bridge consists of three parts, namely the two side-spans all 192 yards and one main span all 434 yards.

Main bridge construction using cable stayed are sustained by the twin towers as tall as 140 feet. Bridge construction using composite floor approx 2.4 metres.

To accommodate cruise ships crossing the Strait of Madura, the bridge providesfree space as high as 35 meters from sea level. In part this is what led to its construction into difficult and hampered, and also led to its construction costs to swell.

Economic impact and population
With the construction of the bridge, the Government hopes to improve theEqualization of income in the region of surabaya madura to the territory, so didthe population, given the increasingly dense with surabaya resident who doesurbanization, mainly from madura region, the Government is hoping by havingthis economic equalization can be the urbanisation.
